Illustration Write Up

1.    From the work submitted for assessment which piece /pieces of work are you most pleased with and why?

I am most pleased with the mark making experimenting. I have decided this one because it is the most interesting working out what my style of drawing is and how everybody’s style is different. I also like it because you cannot go wrong with it so I am more confident doing this. With this technique I can experiment with finding ways of pencil marks to look like different fabric. Another piece of work I am please with is the finding the colour for the character task. It was good working out what my perceptions of colour and character. I like the more personal tasks we get that can’t be wrong because I have thought of them and it is instinctive.

2.    What techniques have you used which you have found to be successful within your work?

The techniques I have used within this are using pencils for the drawing and then adding coloured pencils on some of my illustrations. This technique didn’t really work to well to create shading. The technique I felt that worked best was using a fine liner pen to do mark making, it left a more accurate mark than the pencil I used later on the sheet. If I had time to go back over the project I would use paint, free machining and felting. These are techniques I have used in the past and would have been good to look at again.

3.     Identify an illustrator or an artist who you feel influences your style of work and briefly explain why?

I have looked back at few artists through this project but choosing one it would have to be Quentin Blake, I have used his work in a couple of my projects now I think that his scratchy and very messy but neat at the same time style is similar to mine.

4.    What areas for development can you identify and what are you going to do to address any issues raised?

Areas for development within my illustration work are gaining better drawing skills by becoming more
confident. Also I need to look at more artists to influence my work. I try to look and absorb as many artists and illustration as I can but need to do more of this and comment on them. Issues I have had doing this project is not being here at the beginning of project, I missed some of the sessions but I think I have done well catching up. Also I should have taken more pictures and annotated as I went along instead of doing it all in a week. I also so have looked at more techniques for this project.

Other Illustration Techniques I should have looked at

Painting:
Mark Chadwick's work is interesting, he uses paint to create pictures. This would be an amazing fabric.

Abstract Spin Painting 11 - Item No: 1011

This abstract spin painting is a 100% original Acrylic on canvas painting (Not a Print). The painting is signed and dated 2009 on the back of the canvas.
Size: 30.5cm x 30.5cm (1.8cm depth from wall)

Free Machining:

Caroline Mcatty
Free machining is very scratchy and like my style of drawing. I have looked at this before but would have been good to look at it more.

Felting:

I love using felt and would like to try and draw with it. Just looking online now and found this. Amazing.

The Featherstonehaughs Draw on the Sketchbooks of Egon Schiele

Jon found me some postcards about this, I would love to go and see this but it is in about a week and is 111 miles away.

A clip from the performance:

Some of Egon Schiele's work:

Illustration 21st December 2012:

I have added this artist into my illustration portfolio because I think my drawing is quite similar to his. Very scratchy and messy but you can still see what I have drawn. I also like his work because his costumes drawings was turned into a stage play.

Quentin Blake

I listened to this a couple of days ago and it is a radio program where Quentin Blake is talking about music he enjoys and his life. He talks about how he began illustarting and he trained as a teacher at Downing College, Cambridge.

This is some of his work below, I want to create one of the costumes that look like Quentin Blakes drawings. A bit like this that I researched into at the beginning of the year.

2000: the endless possibilities of drawing appeared beside an article in the Times Educational Supplement promoting the Campaign.

2000: Another drawing to accompany an article promoting the Campaign, this time on the cover of a supermarket magazine.
2005: this group of historical artists appeared on the cover of a sketchbook sold in aid of The Big Draw.

Other Pictures Quentin has done
Another costume/ puppet that use an illustration to create it is Royal Opera House ballet version of Alice in Wonderland. The cat is created from John Tenniel's original illustrations from the book.

More I researched into about Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - The Royal Ballet

Illustration:

His style is very like mine, slightly childish, very messy and a bit scratchy.

Face Drawing

This is a drawing I did at the beginning of the Summer. It isn't in proportion and the shading doesn't look right.

Drawing of my face about 2 months later. It was from this photograph. It is a lot more in proportion. I think doing the drawing project has helped me a lot with my drawing.

Costume Drawing

This was a task where we each got a word and create that look. I got the word Tourist. I needed to add a camera a colourful shirt and cap.

This task was to add colour to the character. Above is my colours for a geography teacher, brown hair, green shirt and blue cords.

Below is my drawing of the green dress. I think I have managed to get the folds better than before.

I am quite happy with this drawing of the dress.

This really didn't work but I think it could if I had more shading.

Here is more of the folds experimenting it didn't quite work as well as I thought.

Flat Fashion Drawings

Children's
Men's
Swimwear
Blazers
Dresses
Tops
Trousers
Skirts
Waistcoats

Coats

Some of the flats are shown in different position to show if the clothes can change. I must remember this when drawing my own.

These are my own flat fashion drawings. I think I have shown all of the aspects of the coat accurately and is detailed well.

Life Drawing

At the beginning of this life drawing session I started with just drawing line gestures of the module and trying to just capture her pose with adding to much detail. I think this was really good as a first exercise to get into drawing.

This is suggested in Tan Huaixiang's Character Costume Figure Drawing: Step-by-Step Drawing Methods for Theatre Costume Designer. It has really helped me understand drawing people. My summer project started with drawing people like this but felt I didn't have the confidence to draw that yet.

This was a drawing I did without drawing the lines before. I like this drawing it is pretty much in proportion and has good shading.

In the afternoon the model was first dressed in this. It is an amazing costume but it was a bit difficult to draw.

I thought it was best to colour this but make it look quite scratchy.

After changing the costume I tried to work out how to make it look like a shiny fabric. The top bit worked sort of, think I need more practice at this.
