Rest of my London Trip Presentation Research

Grayson Perry and the Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman TV Program

Might take offence and then turn and see Alan measles’

Grayson Perry: The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman Book

Other Research

I spent most of the time in the 'Who am I?' gallery.

I thought foetuses were interesting

I also liked the bit about emotions and the bit about gender, who decides if we are either boy or girl.

A lot about identity

I could look at this again for memories and the new 3D project (heritage)

Every time we do, see or learn something new connections in the brain are made.

Some Websites I looked at

Fourth Plinth Notes:

Greyson Perry's work is very about himself and his past. I like how he has made used the theme of the unknown craftsman. I want to look at this and traditional crafts so I am going to take inspiration from Greyson Perry for looking at traditional craftsman and Yinka Shinobare for looking at both his countries history and how he makes traditional looking things that can be related to both countries and cultures.

Notes from reading: Grayson Perry: The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman

‘The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman could be another name for the British Museum’.
Grayson Perry
First visited BM ages 6, recently father left.
Went to see Egyptian boats.
45 years later has a boat as the main part.
Exhibition tells the story of first visit. To show that it is a part of artwork itself and has several themes.

Themes:

Boat

God/ Bear/Religion

Unknown Craftmans

Germany (Bike)

Claire
Doesn’t want people to take photos in the exhibition so people look at things through there own eyes.
One of the main themes of the exhibition is find himself in BM. He means looking at the objects made long ago by fellow men and woman with similar human concerns.
He thought why not make the works he is inspired to create and find objects that respond to them somewhere in its endless storerooms there must be objects that echo my concerns and styles. Wondered what will happen if he reversed the process.

My Notes
The book told me a lot more the exhibition and his thoughts about it than the exhibition itself. I didn't understand the exhibition or appreciate it  until after. Which sort of contradicting to say he didn't want people to photos of the exhibition but you can't really know what it is about until after and you would look at the pictures after.
I think the exhibition didn't say much so you wanted to find out more after which was either by buying this book or by watching the documentary that was on BBC one a few weeks ago and is on BBC iPlayer for a few weeks but that is it.

Notes from watching 'Grayson Perry and the Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman'

Notes I took while watching 'Grayson Perry and the Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman'

which is available on BBC iPlayer at the moment.

Most of the things in the British Museum were made by anonymous craftsman.
2003 won turner prize
transvestite Claire
BM place of pilgrimage, temple

Increasingly dissatisfied with the context of contemporary art

Likes BM full of special things

Exhibition has been taking shape in Grayson's head for years

Sketchbooks are most of his work

Idea was to have BM as Tibetan monastery and a pilgrimage leads up to it.

Building Tomb of Unknown Craftsman. What is the exhibition at BM, it is the contents of a tomb
Ship being an Arc of Crafts manship, carry in to the future.

Tomb for his father, man who who could do DIY, idealised idea of fahter.
When Perry was five, his Mother had an affair with the milk man. His father left when he was six. Grayson remembers his father's shed of tools and motorbike leant up against the wall.

Liked Motor bikes all his life. so built a custom bike. He didn't have skills to build one so designed one and had one built. Status symbol. Main reason for bike is Alan Measles.

Alan Measles is teddy bear. his personal deity. see him as the leader of his temple. top leader in his imaginary universe.

He is a carrier of goodness and maleness.

See AM as God and thinks cuddly toys and God have a lot in common.

Grayson grew up in suburban Essex lived with step father, he disliked. As a child he would with drew into a fantasy, world playing games with AM

AM remains of the heart of Perry's imaginary world to this day.

Wanted to put a Tomb Guardian so made a scary looking AM.

He likes stuff. His own mythology with Alan.

The fantasy scenarios young Grayson played out with Alan Measles. were war games, which pitted boy and bear against a brutal army of invading German soldiers.

Went on a trip to Germany with AM to say sorry to the games Grayson used to play. Mission of appeasement round Germany.

Wants to take art out of a gallery, art isn't seen as art unless it is in a gallery.

Likes the thought of Shrines.
Like Folke costumes.

Weirdest bit in the show was at the end where Grayson went to the Stief Museum.

Alan was only artifact of his childhood, no photos
