Bosch

Bosch's paintings are strange and have quite a haunted sense about them. There isn't much evidence about the reasons behind his work and art historians can't figure out the order in which he did his paintings. It is thought that he was born in the Dutch town of  's-Hertogenbosch. This is where his name was deprived from. His father and grandfather were also painters.

I wanted to look at other artists that had odd scenes and had a theme of death. A friend suggested looking at Bosch. A lot of Bosch's work has odd symbols and in a book I found in the library it said:
"an esoteric philosophy that expresses itself in enigmas and frequently obscure symbols."
"In other words, in Bosch's work a hollow oak stands for 'an emblem of the alchemists' furnace.' A fish is 'a symbolof sin and evil thoughts;' a bagpipe, ' an obscene figure of carnal love'
So in other words different things mean different things. The book also explains that Bosch isn't trying to amuse the viewer but warn him, to save him.
